Google Android Strengthens Lead as Top USA Smartphone (Charts) *Mobile content usage continues increasing*

Google Android led Apple and Research in Motion in smartphone usage for the 3ME September 2011 


Google Android Strengthens Lead As Top USA Smartphone Platform Google Android smartphone OS has the largest USA market share with 44.8% for the 3 months ending September 2011. The Apple iOS platform was second with 27.4%, followed by RIM 18.9%, Microsoft with 5.6%, Symbian with 1.8%, and finally "Other" at 1.5%. Google Android now has a +17.4% lead over Apple iOS, compared to a +13.6% lead the prior quarter, the 3 months ended June 2011. The Google Android smartphone platform was launched in October 2008.


USA Mobile Content Usage Increases Mobile content usages continues to increase. Texting leads at 71.1%, up +1.1 from the prior quarter, the 3 months ending June 2011. Browsing was second at 42.9%, up +2.8 from June. Using downloaded apps was third at 42.5%, up +3.0 from June, and may overtake browsing soon. Social networking was fourth at 31.5%, up +2.4. Playing games was fifth at 28.8%, up +1.9, and listening to music was sixth at 20.9, up +1.9.



comScore Reports September 2011 U.S. Mobile Subscriber Market Share

RESTON, VA, November 4, 2011 – comScore, Inc. (NASDAQ: SCOR), a leader in measuring the digital world, today released data from the comScore MobiLens service, reporting key trends in the U.S. mobile phone industry during the three month average period ending September 2011. The study surveyed more than 30,000 U.S. mobile subscribers and found Samsung to be the top handset manufacturer overall with 25.3 percent market share. Google Android continued to gain ground in the smartphone market reaching 44.8 percent market share.

Smartphone Platform Market Share
87.4 million people in the U.S. owned smartphones during the three months ending in September, up 12 percent from the preceding three month period. Google Android ranked as the top smartphone platform with 44.8 percent market share, up 4.6 percentage points from the prior three-month period. Apple secured the #2 position, growing 0.8 percentage points to account for 27.4 percent of the smartphone market. RIM ranked third with 18.9 percent share, followed by Microsoft (5.6 percent) and Symbian (1.8 percent).

Mobile Content Usage
In September, 71.1 percent of U.S. mobile subscribers used text messaging on their mobile device, up 1.5 percentage points. Browsers were used by 42.9 percent of subscribers (up 2.8 percentage points), while downloaded applications were used by 42.5 percent (up 3.0 percentage points). Accessing of social networking sites or blogs increased 2.4 percentage points to 31.5 percent of mobile subscribers. Game-playing was done by 28.8 percent of the mobile audience (up 1.9 percentage points), while 20.9 percent listened to music on their phones (up 1.9 percentage points).
